RE-WAFER (REUSABLE WATER FILTER) FILTER AIR TEPAT GUNA BAGI MASYARAKAT SEKITAR TPST PIYUNGAN

Abstract
Piyungan landfill in Yogyakarta province has been polluting the surrounding groundwater. The local people complained about the quality and the smell of the groundwater. The sample of Piyungan groundwater showed a high COD contaminant, the smelly odor, yellowish color, and salty taste. One method that can reduce levels of contaminants in the water is filtration. Re-Wafer is a reusable water filter using plastic bottles and materials such as cloth, gravel, charcoal, zeolite, and silica. This study aimed to detect the contaminants in the groundwater and to test Re-Wafer to filter the groundwater. The variables were chemical and physical parameters Fe, COD, organic substances, pH, and hardness. The research used a experimental method with pre and post-test. Water samples were collected from the groundwater of closest residents to the Piyungan landfill (+4KM). Five water samples (200 ml) were filtered in the Re-wafer twice. The result showed that the pre-test parameters indicated the levels of Fe 0.864 mg/L, COD 28.608 mg/L, Organic Substances 8.534 mg/L, Ph 6.978, and Hardness 370.28 mg/L. COD level was higher than the Indonesian standard. After filtration, there was a significant decrease in COD 15,872 mg/L (p=0.011) complying the standards and Fe 0.56 mg/L (p=0.009), while other parameters complied with the standard and did not show a significant difference. The physical water parameters also showed a better odor, taste, and color. In conclusion, Re-wafer is an applicable water filter that can be used to increase the quality of Piyungan grounfwater and reduce the COD contaminant in Piyungan groundwater.
