Abstract

The background of this research began with initiatives in Indonesia to an alarming level. According to the Indonesian Retailers Association (APRINDO), in just one year, it has reached 10.95 million pieces of plastic bags, equivalent to 65.7 hectares of plastic bags. Plastic is a chemical polymer that is widely used in daily life, this is because plastic has several advantages compared to other polymer materials which are lighter, stronger, transparent, waterproof, and more affordable. The use of plastic as packaging can not be separated from everyday life, but plastic can also cause some environmental problems, namely cannot be recycled and cannot be decomposed naturally. In recent years, environmentally friendly food packaging has become an alternative because it is made from natural ingredients and is easily degraded by microorganisms and the weather. Therefore, this research was developed to produce edible films that have high mechanical properties. In this research, the synthesis of the edible film based on banana weevil starch and cassava peel with a plasticizer mixture composition is glycerol. The research method uses the Blending method which is to mix the prepared material into one and heat it up to ± 75oC. As a basic ingredient, banana weevil starch and cassava peel waste which have a high starch and fiber content need to be considered as the main ingredient in making the edible film. Therefore, by combining banana weevil starch and cassava peel waste is expected to minimize the accumulation of plastic waste.
