Abstract

Styrofoam is widely used for fast food and beverage packaging. However, styrofoam has a negative impact on health and the environment and cannot even be broken down by soil microorganisms. So to replace it, we need a package whose characteristics must be close to that of styrofoam in the form of biofoam from starch and cellulose. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical properties and decomposition ability of the banana peel-bagasse biofoam. The method for making biofoam uses thermopressing. Based on the results obtained from the experiment, it can be concluded that the physical properties of biofoam in the form of water absorption, the value is close to styrofoam. The characteristics of biofoam are influenced by the characteristics of the raw material and the conditions of the manufacturing process. The addition of bagasse cellulose can increase the density of the biofoam and its compressive strength value. On the other hand, banana peel and bagasse biofoam can be decomposed by soil microorganisms within 10 days.
