Abstract
Tofu is a popular local food in Indonesia. The home-based tofu industry in Krapyak, Seyegan, Sleman is one of the tofu producers in Yogyakarta. The process of tofu processing produces solid and liquid wastes. However, the tofu processing wastes have not been managed properly. Based on our initial observations, the waste from the tofu industry is not treated and is immediately dumped into a ditch that empties into the reservoir. This study intends to provide an innovative solution by processing tofu wastes into carbon nanodots (C-dots) that can be used as photocatalysts. The C-dots can then be used to purify the tofu liquid wastes. This research can provide essential benefits, which is based on the principle of ‘from waste, by waste, and for waste”. Therefore, it is important find a way to treat tofu waste so that it does not pollute the environment. This study used an experimental method, which is divided into two stages, synthesis stage of Cdots and the stage of tofu waste purification using C-dots. There are two main ingredients in the synthesis of C-dots, namely liquid and solid wastes from tofu processing. Based on the results of the light intensity and UV-Vis spectroscopy tests, C- dots made from tofu liquid waste can be used for purifying tofu liquid waste. This results are expected to be a recommendation for home-based tofu industry in Krapyak and others to create an environmentally friendly waste treatment plant in order to realize regional independence and utilization of local potential.
